Reading the Abbreviations

  • S = Standard, D = Daylight (Saving)
  • EST = Eastern Standard Time, EDT = Eastern Daylight Time
  • Clocks spring forward 1 hour during DST (March–November)

States Split Across Time Zones

Some states have time zone boundaries running through them:

  • Indiana — Mostly Eastern; some western counties are Central
  • Kentucky — Eastern half is Eastern; western half is Central
  • Tennessee — Knoxville area is Eastern; Nashville and Memphis are Central
  • Nebraska — Mostly Central; far west is Mountain
  • North & South Dakota — Eastern halves are Central; western halves are Mountain
  • Kansas — Mostly Central; a few western counties are Mountain
  • Texas — Mostly Central; far west (El Paso) is Mountain
  • Oregon — Mostly Pacific; a few eastern counties are Mountain
  • Idaho — Southern part is Mountain; northern panhandle is Pacific

The Eastern Time Zone covers the most Americans — about 47% of the US population lives in ET.
